Description

It's been a long time coming but now its time to tackle one of my more favourite ones ^^

Build Notes

To start off this killer rifle ninjato is the blade.

I cut out the shape of the blade from a plank of 12 mm pine using a jig saw, which I then shaped the curve and bevel of, using a belt sander and sanding paper.

With that done, I had to then go about making the Tsuba (handle) of the katana. To do so involves a very traditional approach, where I chisel out a cavity into two separate halves of the handle for the blade to rest in between.

I should note when chiselling the cavities it is essential that the longer length of the cavity is in the same direction of the grain of the plank as well as that great care and patience care needs to be taken when doing any from of chiselling;

It is very easy to slip with the hammer and glance a blow into your other hand if you’re not careful and very easy to accidently split the work piece by hammering too hard and have to start over so please take the necessary safety precautions and take your time.

With the two recesses done I then cut out the outline of the handles and sandwiched the blade in between them with contact cement and then cleaned up any imperfections and frays with sandpaper.

Next stage is to start detailing the handle so look forward to that.

Nice Work. Loving the WIP. Just a question. In regards to the blade on the ninjato, It looks like to me in the last picture its somewhat round. Is it supposed to be like that or is that mainly dude to restrictions placed on the prop per "con" rules?
