I’ve seriously wanted to get around with this one for a while but have been putting it off for ages until when good friends Pancakecos
and Nimue Klein
have kindly asked me to help teach them to make a set for their forthcoming Attack on Titan cosplays. So I hope you look forward to our progress on our path to rid the world of the Titan menace and do give them a watch and follow while they tackle the sewing side of things. ^^Build Notes
Starting on the blades themselves, two identical base blanks were cut out of a 12mm (0.5 inch) thick pine plank using a standard jigsaw.
The blades each roughly 85 cm (33 inch) long from hilt to tip, had the cutting edge shaped using a belt sander to produce the bevel.
The burrs and edges were then cleaned up with sandpaper, which then allowed work on the handle grip to begin.
The handle grip is sourced from my good friend the EVA foam gym floor mat, since it is really easy to work with in terms of cutting and shaping, but also mainly because one of the two faces common to these mats has the contour pattern of the grip I’m looking for.
So the pieces were first cut out using a standard hobby knife to match the contour of the handle, then using my dremmel and grinding drum bit, shaped the edging until it looked more like the pistol grip I needed, before lastly super gluing it to the wooden blade base itself.
So from here I need to go about attaching the rest of the parts of the handle and eventually start work on the side sheathes so look forward to that.
