Sealing foam and prepping for painting.

With all types of craft foam you need to first seal the material before you can undergo painting of any kind. Without sealing the foam before painting, you will find the paint will not adhere to the surface very well and end up being absorbed by the material resulting in a poor looking final product.

To seal foam the most common technique to do so is to use is a mixture of 1:1 PVA glue (wood glue) and water. I like to use cheap see-through plastic cups that way to can tell how much of each you have.

Mix the two together and you will have milk like mixture and proceed to do multiple coats onto the piece with a cheap paintbrush. The thinning out with water also helps prevent leaving streaks caused by the brush bristles.

At minimum I like to do somewhere between 8 to 10 coats to get a good surface to work with, you’ll feel the foam get stiffer and less spongy and eventually appear glossy.

With the final coats done I then gave it a good coats of grey primer to prepare for the next and final stage which is painting and weathering so look forward to that.

Something easier and quicker than wood glue is arousal Plastidip. It only takes a couple coats and dries quick, as it's very much like spray paint.
